ENEMY CLASSES, RANKS & ICONS
The enemies in RS2 are sorted in 16+ different Classes: Skeleton, Zombie, Beastman, Flying, Demon, Beast, Insect, Serpent, Fish, Plant, Aquatic, Inorganic, Spirit, Human, Ghost, Amphibian/Reptile, plus Special Classes and Enemies with specific map icons (Giant, Dragon, Special, Boss..).
On area maps, each class is represented by a unique monster icon. If your party touches a monster icon, a battle will occur, with at least one monster of the same type as the icon (and possibly enemies of other types as well).
In each generic Class there are 16 enemies of growing difficulty (Rank), encountered depending on your total Battle Count.
Each monster has an Encounter Value (EV) which, roughly halved (multiplied by about 0.475), gives a threshold in number of battles, above which the enemy can appear in battle.
Below are all the enemies by Class and Rank, with their EV between brackets (EV=65535 means the enemy never appears as a main monster).
A few generic enemies can also be found under a specific icon, usually for narrative reasons.
Finally, there are a few unique enemies with specific icons, usually bosses.

ENEMY / MONSTER LIST
Notes on the Table
The names are those of the official Remaster edition. Follow the code ID value and the original name in Japanese.
Entries are in alphabetical order. Just search this page (CTRL+F) if you are looking for a specific enemy.
Concerning the pictures (home-made screenshots, like everything else on this site): some may seem a bit small when viewed on a desktop computer, but with the exception of the largest enemies, the pictures scale exactly with the sprite sizes, for a more faithful rendering.
As seen above, all enemies are sorted into 16 main Classes (and 16 Ranks within each), plus special Classes (mainly unique enemies and bosses).
The Class Rank corresponds to the enemy's Encounter Value ('EV') which, roughly halved (multiplied by about 0.475), gives a threshold in number of battles (your Battle Counter), above which the enemy can appear in battle.
Roughly, the strongest monsters start appearing after 800 battles, and about 40% of the time (max rate) after 1224 battles.
The monsters with an EV of 65535 (noted as 'fixed' below) are fixed regular side-enemies in certain locations.
While Classes are there for classification and convenience only (they have no consequence whatsoever, contrarily to Races for example), monsters of the same Race do share, stat-wise, some similarities. To name a few:
- Skeletons are strong against Stabs and Arrows, weaker vs. Fire, and immune to all Status ailments except Stun and Air Pressure.
- Zombies are weaker against Heat and Status attacks, and immune to Paralysis, Sleep, Blind, Mind, Poison and Horror.
- Beastmen are generally weaker to Stabbing, Arrows and Bolt, and stronger vs. Status. They also all possibly drop items.
- All Flying enemies have the Float Status (see below) and most cannot be stunned.
- Most Demons and all Insects are immune to the Horror spell.
- Insects are also extremely weak to Cold; as are Serpents, most of which are also immune to Stun.
- Most Fish are strong to Heat (and Status), and immune to Stun and Horror.
- Most Plants are weak to Fire and all are immune to Paralysis, Blind, Stun and Horror.
- All Aquatic enemies are immune to Stun.
- Most Inorganic are immune to all Status ailments but Insta-death and Air Pressure, and all are very resistant to Blunt attacks.
- Spirits are in general very strong against Magic and, like Inorganic monsters, most are immune to all Status ailments but Insta-death and Air Pressure. They can also all drop items, like all Humans.
- Most Ghost enemies are very weak vs. Magic and have no item drop. All Float!
- Reptiles and Amphibians are susceptible to all Status ailments, and most are strong to Status attacks.
- All Dragons are immune to Insta-death, Paralysis and Air Pressure, are strong vs. Slash and even more resistant to Status attacks. They can drop nice items!
- All Giants are susceptible to Stun (most are also susceptible to Sleep and Poison).
All enemies actually belong to one of these 16 different Races, which only partly correspond to the 16 Classes above: Human, Demon, Giant, Beast, Beastman, Aquatic, Dragon, Amphibian, Reptile, Plant, Insect, Fire Elemental, Water Elemental, Wind Elemental, Earth Elemental, and None.
Race is an important parameter, as some techs are Race-dependent for extra damage or status effect (insta-death), and as some Races benefit from special effects (regenerating in a specific battle magic environment).
For the complete list of tech critical hits, see these Notes in the Tech section and the Magic section.
Additionally, some Races have special HP regenerative powers and peculiarities:
- Demons regenerate in Dark environment and are susceptible to Saint Fire and *Exorcism Blade.
- Fire, Water, Wind & Earth Elementals benefit from HP regen in their respective magic environment.
- Fire and Earth Elementals: no damage atop Mt. Comroon against the Stone.
- Enemies with no Race ('None') have permanent HP regeneration (noted simply 'HP Regen' below). This concerns only very few enemies (Gel Matter, Golden Baum, Kzinssie 0.5/1, Dantarg 4).
There are also 4 additional parameters (flags):
- Gender is determined by the presence or absence of a Female flag (noted 'F' below).
The Short Sword tech Screwdriver inflicts a critical hit on Females, who are immune to the Temptation tech.
- The Float status (noted 'FL' below) renders immune to Ground attacks.
It concerns all Winged and Ghost enemies, most Demon & Spirit, some Insect & Plant, Kzinssie, Wagnas.
- All Undead enemies regenenerate HP in Dark environment, are immune to Horror and techs that attempt to Stun, steal HP or damage LP (Feint, Daze, HP Absorb, Maelstrom, Life Blade, Sunspot Destroyer, Reaper Scythe).
Quite consistently, this concerns all Skeleton enemies, most Zombie (all but Dullahan), some Ghost, and some dead people (Garon, Georg and his soldiers).
- A specific flag provides immunity against the Horror spell. Are immune all Demons, Dragons, Giants, Aquatics, Insects, Plants, Wind & Earth Elementals, and monsters with the Undead flag.
- All Boss enemies regen in Dark environment and are immune to Marionette and Life Blade.
Note that the Magic Environment in which HP Regen occurs is noted in the Element section.
Enemies have possible Status Ailment Immunities:
- against the regular status effects: Insta-death ('Death', includes LP-damaging & Petrifying attacks), Paralyze, Sleep, Darkness ('Dark'), Mind (= Confuse, Charm, Silence), Poison, Stun,
- and against the special Air Pressure ('Pressure') and Horror.
See the Status section for details.
All enemies have an array of stats, exactly like your characters:
- HP SP MP LP. Note that all enemies have only 1 LP: when their HP reaches zero, they are defeated for good. Consequently, Petrifying or LP-damaging attacks result in death and are assimilated as Insta-death attacks.
- Simplified TechLV and MagLV, which serve as reference values for damage formulae and SP/MP calculation (SP=TechLVx7, MP=MagLVx8+5).
- STR DEX MAG SPD STA. See the Stats section for details.
- Def values vs. SL BL ST SH and HE CO BO STS (if ≥ 128, then dmg = 0). See the Attributes section for details.
- Possible additional Atk values coming from equipped weapons.
- Some enemies are also equipped with operational Shields or Guards that protect against specific Def attributes, with activation rates and Def values if relevant. Like your characters, if the enemy uses a two-handed attacks, their shield cannot activate. See the Shield section for details.
All enemies are worth, when defeated, a fixed amount of Technical Points (TP), which serve as EXP in RS2 and allow you to level up your MLVs and your characters' individual HP and LVs. For explanations and details, see the Skill LV and MLV sections, and the HP, LV & MLV Gain section and tables, all parts of the Gameplay section.
Enemies also have 2 fixed sets of actions, with 8 actions each (techs or spells).
Note that while your Formations will weigh heavily on the targeting probabilities, some monsters, interestingly enough, bypass these with special targeting patterns and target preferably:
- the character with the lowest HP: Helter Skelter, Chariot, Revenant, Rotting Demon, Sapping Demon, Leech Demon, Dullahan, Winged Mare, Horned One, Hippoman, Quetzalcoatl, Lilith, Manshark, Deep One, Water Spirit, Adept, Vicar, Elder, Ramah, Poison Eater, Sorrow, Lizardlord, Kzinssie 2, Cyfreet, Garon (Ghost), Sorcerer, Seven Heroes (Bokhohn, Kzinssie).
- the character with the highest HP: Dreadknight, Brain eater, Vampire (F), Ogre, Battle Ogre, Champion, Azure Demon, Crimson Demon, Amnesia, Silver Beat, Draft Red, Black Legion.
- the Emperor: Kzinssie 1.
Concretely, as encounters are random, you cannot prepare to battle regular enemies (since you mostly never know which enemies you will be facing), so complete stat charts and actions lists would thus be quite superfluous for regular enemies. Fixed enemies and bosses are another story, and their detailed data can be found in the Boss section.
In the tables below are only given:
the enemies' HP and the TP reward you get at the end of the battle, their possible HP regen
and their relative Def strengths and weaknesses, like so:
+ strong (≃25% stronger) / ++ very strong (≃50%) / +++ extremely strong (over 50%) /
- weak (≃25% weaker) / -- very weak (≃50%) / --- extremely weak (over 50%)
E.g. Alraune: HE- / CO BO+ STS+++ = weak to Heat, Strong to Cold & Bolt, extremely strong to Status.
E.g. Elekiter: CO-- SL- / BL+
These approximations are partly subjective and probably go into too much details (100/200% brackets would have been relevant too, depending on the enemy), but they give a relatively accurate idea of an enemy's resistances and weaknesses (all the more so as enemies 'level up' alongside you). The immunities are particularly worth of note. Mind that 'immunities' (Def=128) can be broken by the Nutcracker tech (Def-50%), although a Def of 64 is still extremely high and hardly worth the trouble.
In addition to the usual attributes, Phys = Physical (SL BL ST SH) and Mag = Magic (HE CO BO STS) for general strength or weakness.
Note that TechLV is also an all-important value used to determine your sparking probabilities. It ranges between 1 and 43. Exact matches with Techs Spark Rank give the best sparking probability, but in general the higher the TechLV the better to spark techs. In the tables below you will find it noticeably placed, above the item drops. See the Tech Sparking Chances section for details.
Some enemies can drop items when defeated. Item drops are rare.
There are two item drop categories and probabilities: regular drop = 2.3%, rare drop = 0.8%, (sometimes +0.4% to each, depending on enemy numbers and if previous drop).
See also the Victory section.
Remaster: The Bejeweled Ring significantly increases drop rate probability (cumulative!).
Note that, unlike in most RPGs, enemies do not drop gold. Instead, you get a fixed amount of money (your Imperial Revenue) every time you battle. See the Revenue & Treasury section for details.
Rare Monsters, Rare Drops
There are a few generic monsters that you will rarely or never see in game unless you are looking for them specifically, because they only appear at specific places with a specific BC range:
- Liquid (Spirit 3) only appears only in the Last Dungeon (BC≃209). That is a challenge!
- Nixer & Nixie (Fish 4 & 5), only appear in the Last Dungeon with a BC of about 364 and 376.
- Air (Spirit 4) appears at Mt Comroon (BC≃139) and in the Last Dungeon (BC≃203).
- Flame (Spirit 5) appears at Mt Comroon (170<BC<285) and in the Last Dungeon (BC≃212), while Soil (Spirit 6) appears at Mt Comroon (BC≃181), in the Gelid/Firn/Loess Ruins, inside Emerged Island (BC≃246) and in the Last Dungeon (BC≃206), and they unarguably the easiest to spot.
Notes:
- Nixer and Nixie (at least) can appear later on in the Last Dungeon (last section: Human / Skeleton & Ghost).
- The Remaster Edition makes it too easy by making them appear in the Maze of Memory.. Oh well!
